Looking for ways to reduce the amount of salt you eat?
Looking for a reason?
Eating more sodium than we need puts us at risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. Heart disease is the number one killer in Canada. Sounds like a pretty good reason to me!
Since I buy and prepare most of the food in my household, I am always looking for the next step or strategy to provide healthier food to my family.
Here are 3 great ways to reduce the amount of sodium your family eats:
1) Buy more fresh, frozen, or dried foods without salt instead of canned foods (vegetables, beans, fish, etc.)
2) Buy less pre-prepared foods or processed foods. Some of the foods highest in salt are pizzas, burgers, hotdogs, sandwiches/submarines.
3) Buy low-sodium condiments. Also, instead of salt or condiments such as soy sauce, ketchup, etc. try to use other seasonings such as spices and herbs.
